Define a network and its purpose?

A network is a connected system of objects or people, It is a series of points or nodes interconnected by communication paths. Networks can interconnect with other networks and contain subnetworks.

For example a computer network is a collection of computers and other hardware devices connected together so that users can share hardware, software, and data, as well as electronically communicate with each other.

Computer networks may be classified according to the scale: Personal area network (PAN), Local Area Network (LAN), Campus Area Network (CAN), Metropolitan area network (MAN), or Wide area network (WAN).
